I want to talk to the black sheep of the family- the guys who listened to their music a little to loud, the girls who dressed contrary to the trending fashion, and the nerds who nobody got. If you were in any of those categories or found yourself in another fringe section, congratulations! Because right there you're already part of the libertarian family of misfits and rabble rousers without even knowing it!
What do all these misfits have in common? They were going against the grain from the start. Often people, young and old, try and go with the flow; walk in the same line as everyone else, talk like everyone else, no one wants to be different, because different is lonely. Our choices, our decisions, what you choose to do makes you who you are, and ultimately everyone wants to have the freedom to choose who they are and how they live their lives. Think about it, we have hundreds of different cars to choose from, hundreds of different drinks, hundreds of different religions, you name it, you typically have a buffet of options.
Options are great, options are what make us happy, but sometimes certain options are cut off from us because others know that sometimes, people choose to do things certain people don't like.
Sometimes, assholes take away your options.
There is nothing more crooked, more disgusting, more fixed and rigged than modern American political thinking. From the moment you enter America's public education system, you are immediately bombarded not with actual knowledge, but a series of control measures meant to make you disciplined and conformed. Instead of teaching the about the Constitution and free markets in our classes, we are cornered between two terrible choices; do you want big government now? Or do you want big government now?
You think something doesn't seem right? Good, because now you're thinking.
Both conservatives and progressives/liberals/no-communists/democratic-socialists (whatever the Hell they call themselves) are really more similar than you think. They want to control your personal freedom and economic liberty, plain and simple. It seems like each time you see a politician give a speech, they always try and preach about what rights of yours they're protecting or what free stuff you're going to get, but there's always a catch.
The conservatives try and say they're protecting your economic freedom while legislating their individual moral authority on citizens, while the progressives will protect your civil liberties but rig the economy to drive us all into a welfare state. What's absolutely mind blowing is that unless you've been in a bunker since 1960 waiting for the Russians to come, both Republican and Democratic administrations have successfully been able to control, coerce, and manipulate your life in one way or another.
The great American hostage crisis that defines our concept of left-wing and right-wing politics, makes us choose what we value more while sacrificing one of the most important gifts from our Creator we have- free will.
The ability to be socially tolerant and fiscally responsible was defined simply by my old boss at FreedomWorks, Matt Kibbe, who stated bluntly that the concept if libertarianism is "don't hurt people and don't take their stuff."
The rules for life you learned on playground as a kid echo into adulthood for everyday joes like you and I, but sadly the state doesn't get it. The state manages to hurt people who commit victimless crimes, takes people's private property for the "common good", and then they take away your choices whether by ballot, red tape and regulation, and executive decree.
The ability to think for oneself is the biggest threat to those who wish to have absolute sovereignty over the individual natural rights and free will.
You think you want freedom? Tolerance? Respect? The ability to control your life and yours alone? Start by asking yourself this: Each time someone wants to make a new law of some sort, is so important it's worth being enforced at gunpoint?
Once you start looking at the world from that vantage point my friend, welcome to the world of the unplugged, the uncontrolled, and the free thinking.
You are libertarian.
rock, love, and live free...
